New ESFLU Guidance: Laboratory Protocols for the Detection and Monitoring of Swine Influenza A Virus
ESFLU is pleased to announce the publication of its new guidance document, Addressing Swine Influenza A Virus – Protocols and Guidelines for Laboratory Diagnosis.
With the increasing circulation of swine influenza viruses in European pig populations and the emergence of new variants, including strains with zoonotic potential, robust surveillance and monitoring are more important than ever. This guidance provides example molecular, serological, and virological protocols for the detection and monitoring of swine influenza A virus (IAV-S).
The document aims to support harmonized laboratory practices while recognizing that laboratories may use alternative validated methods. The protocols are provided as examples and do not constitute an endorsement of any specific company or commercial product.
Developed through the collaborative efforts of the ESFLU working group 1, this guidance is intended to support improved surveillance, knowledge exchange, and coordinated responses to emerging swine influenza threats.
